When people talk on how Indonesia could benefit from carbon trading by using the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) mechanism, there should be some underlying problems that needs to be clarified before we can utilize the scheme in a beneficial manner. In principle, we should support any efforts to protect our remaining forests. However, the REDD mechanism is still in the process of negotiation in the international level, and the term REDD should be used carefully. REDD should not be seen simply as financial grants from developed countries to developing countries in order to conserve the forests. REDD is a financial incentive to keep forests that are at risk from deforestation to be protected in their natural state. In return, the financier will gain carbon credits from the avoided carbon emissions from reduced deforestation and forest degradation.

Problem kelalaian dalam mengelola Sumber Daya Air (SDA) akan berakibat bencana. Wacana privatisasi SDA pun semakin nyata dirasakan masyarakat. Potret konflik SDA di berbagai daerah kian meluas. Cepat atau lambat, krisis kelangkaan air akan terjadi di Indonesia.
Sejak tahun 1998, 208 negara di dunia telah mengalami kelangkaan air, bahkan angka ini diperkirakan akan naik menjadi 56 negara pada tahun 2025. Meluasnya konflik air di Indonesia, kerap memicu peluang Indonesia menjadi bagian dari negara yang mengalami kelangkaan air tersebut. Jika akar masalah tidak segera diselesaikan dan model pengelolaan air tidak segera diperbaiki, maka ancaman tersebut akan terjadi. |

The Government Regulation No. 2 Year 2008 on Non-Tax State Revenue from Forest Usage for Development Interests Outside of Forest Activities in the Department of Forestry has raised controversies. The regulation that is currently issued permits corporations to carry out open-pit mining practices in Indonesia’s Protected Forests (Hutan Lindung). It will inevitably harm the remaining forests and will cause calamity in the future.
The controversies began with Article 38 (4) of the Indonesian Forestry Law (Law No. 41/1999) that stipulates the banning of open-pit mining in protected forests. Thirteen mining companies have already signed Contract of Work between the Government of Indonesia which allowed them to carry out open-pit mining in Indonesia’s forests, which at the time were not labeled as protected forests. Thus, further continuing their mining practices under the Forestry Law will become a violation of law.

Jenuh sekali apabila melihat perdebatan “orang-orang tua” mengenai korelasi antara demokrasi dengan kesejahteraan rakyat. Perdebatan ini dimulai dengan ungkapan bahwa demokrasi hanyalah alat untuk mencapai kesejahteraan. Dalam posisi awal seperti ini, timbul semacam pandangan utilitarian bahwa cara apapun bisa digunakan untuk mencapai kesejahteraan yang diidamkan oleh rakyat – kebahagiaan, meskipun tidak melalui demokrasi. Bagi masyarakat yang skeptis (dan putus asa), maka mereka akan merasa bahwa demokrasi yang dijanjikan 10 tahun yang lalu oleh Reformasi, belum memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan. Semenjak Pemilu dan 290 Pilkada (sampai Desember 2006 – LSI, 2007) yang diselenggarakan di Indonesia, Human Development Index Indonesia masih berada di peringkat 107 dari 177 negara (UNDP, 2007). |

The Jakarta Post Most environmentalists would agree that Al Gore and the IPCC's winning the Nobel Peace Prize was also a triumph for environmental advocates working to put green issues at the top of everyone's priority list. Al Gore and the IPCC were awarded because of "their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change". It does not take a math wiz, however, to figure out the correlation between peace and the environment. Tackling the world's conflicts can start with solving the root problems, such as poverty and the mismanagement of natural resources. |

Setahun sudah semburan lumpur panas dari pengeboran milik Lapindo Brantas Inc meluap. Tidak ada yang menyangka pengeboran tersebut berakhir tragis.encana eksplorasi gas bumi itupun gagal dengan munculnya semburan lumpur panas. Luapan lumpur muncul pada 150 meter-200 meter arah barat daya dari sumur Banjarpanji- 1 di wilayah Kecamatan Porong Kabupaten Sidoarjo pada 29 Mei 2006.? Setidaknya 32.000 jiwa lebih penduduk menjadi korban dan merusak lebih dari 457 ha lahan di sekitar wilayah tersebut. |

Hadirnya Undang-undang Penanaman Modal (UUPM) banyak melahirkan kontroversi. Hal ini wajar karena kehadiran UUPM ibarat menggelar karpet merah bagi penanam modal.Apalagi penanam modal yang selama ini cenderung mengabaikan lingkungan dan berbagai aspek kehidupan justru diberi peluang besar untuk melupakan sejarah pahit masa lalu. Praktis, bukannya bercermin dan berbenah diri, pemerintah malah menggali lubang kehancuran bangsa. |
